Those are the key ingredients for Lars Christensen and his family as they realize their dream of building a container summer house on Samsø, a popular Danish island.
On Instagram, they share the stories and pictures of how they are making it happen on @ourdanishcontainerhouse
Initially, Lars turned to Google to search for the three containers he needed for his project. Here he was able to locate a couple of suppliers in the vicinity and called them up for price quotes. Next step was then to visit the container yard. A challenge here was that it was not possible to inspect the actual container as it was placed on top of a stack of containers.
A trucking company was then contracted to bring the container to Lars’ backyard where the building could begin. Here it was important to make sure that trucking company could offload it, as Lars had no crane on site.
The family is now well on the way to realizing the dream with the containers already installed on the island, where the rest of the building process is taking place. Here, things like building regulations and insulation for the (not so warm) Danish weather are important issues.
There are many things to consider when starting a project like this. According to Lars, the top three things to consider when embarking on a container summer house project are:
Make sure you get any approvals required for compliance with building regulations
Consider the weather (Denmark needs more insulation than warmer countries)
Make sure that the container is guaranteed to be wind-and-watertight
